New Year's Day is observed on January 1, the first day of the year on the Gregorian calendar and the modern Julian calendar used in ancient Rome. With most countries using the Gregorian calendar as the primary calendar, New Year's Day is the closest to being in the world as a truly global holiday, often celebrated with fireworks on the stroke of midnight, as the New Year begins. January 1 in the Julian calendar is currently January 14th on the Gregorian calendar, and it is at this point that supporters of some Orthodox churches celebrate the New Year.
